moments, and at Hlosi Game Lodge we endeavor to do just that. We have
learnt that many guests arrive not knowing exactly what to expect. Here
are a few answers to the most frequently asked questions, and they may
help you to be better prepared for your safari.
Hlosi Lodge is situated in a Malaria Free area, so no anti-malaria
medication is necessary.

Weather: We are fortunate to be in one of the most temperate regions in
South Africa.
Summer temperature (Oct – March) during the day may go as high as 36C /
97C. Sunrise is approximately 05h30 and sunset at 19h30. Winter (May –
August) has some beautiful warm sunny days, but mornings and evenings
are on the chilly side.
The average rainfall is 550mm per year, and falls mainly in the summer
months.
Game viewing is good throughout the year.
Dress is informal and there are few “must brings”. Clothing of neutral
colours, a good pair of walking shoes (sandals are not recommended). A
warm windproof jacket and jerseys for game drives. Light clothing and
swimming costume for the summer months.
A good sun hat and a high SPF sun block should be brought along,
especially if you require a specific hypoallergenic brand. Each land
rover carries a tube of sun block and it is highly recommended that you
make use of it.
Camera Equipment: Good photography is generally limited to daylight. We
use high-powered spotlights on night drives, a moving vehicle makes
photography difficult unless you have a high powered flash, which you
are welcome to use. We recommend 100-200 A.S.A. film. The most versatile
lens should be capable of ranges between 70 to 210/210.
A pair of binoculars is a must for keen bird watchers.
Vehicles: Game drives are conducted in specially modified four wheel
drive Land rovers designed to carry up to 10 guests. The vehicle does
not have a roof or sides and allows for maximum all-round visibility.
The capabilities of the vehicle are such that it is able to traverse
fairly rough terrain, with the exception of ecologically sensitive
areas, particularly after rain.
You could find yourself getting close to big game, this should not alarm
you provided you observe the basic do’s and don’ts as discussed by your
ranger prior to and during the safari.
Food: Sharon is well known for her wonderful food, and mealtimes are an
occasion, a blend of traditional African to Contemporary cuisines. Only
the freshest ingredients are used – a real celebration of what the
region has to offer.
Special dietary requirements: We cater for special dietary requirements.
Please inform your travel agent or contact us directly so we can make
the necessary preparations.
For that special day / event: At Hlosi Lodge we pride ourselves for
going the extra mile on your special day or event. Please advise us if
it is a birthday, anniversary, engagement, or any other special day.
Honeymooners are specially catered for. Private dinners are served on
the veranda of the Honeymoon Suite or in the bush. Sparkling wine,
flowers, and lots of candles in the suite – the ideal getaway for a
romantic celebration.
Hlosi Lodge can arrange small intimate weddings under the African skies,
or at the historical churches (Methodist and Anglican) in the small
village of Sidbury, with the reception on the Reserve.
Length of Stay: A minimum of a two-night stay is recommended to
experience and appreciate what Hlosi Lodge has to offer.
Guest Safety: Your safety is of utmost importance. The Ranger is fully
qualified, and staff monitor animal activity within the Lodge area.
There is a duty ranger on call at night (sleeps at the Lodge). Guests
are escorted to their individual suites, especially between dusk and
dawn.
Laundry: Hlosi Lodge offers a laundry service, at a nominal fee. No dry
cleaning is offered.
Communications: Telephone, internet and fax facilities are available.
Water: Our tap water is safe for human consumption, but bottled water is
also provided.
